"Is This America?" is a new drama by Michael Rosenthal based on history set in Meridian, Mississippi in the summer of 1964. The play chronicles five days in the lives of civil rights activists during the first stage of the Freedom Summer Movement for African-American voting rights. When an idealistic NYC public school teacher experiences a divine intervention and challenges the movement's leadership, an already volatile situation becomes explosive. Is This America? explores the thin line between the dream of liberation for an oppressed people and the terrifying possibility of annihilation prompted by hatred, tradition and inhumanity.
